Term 1


Our Changing World:

Plants and Animals

  • Our Changing World: Classifying Plants: Recognise that living things can be
    grouped in a variety of ways
  • Who am I? : Vertebrates and Invertebrates.
  • Classifying Vertebrates and Invertebrates: Recognise that living things can be
    grouped in a variety of ways

Physics: Sound

  • What is sound?
  • How sound is made: Identify how sounds are made, associating some of them
    with something vibrating
  • Sound and vibration in relation to the volume of sound: Find patterns between
    the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it
  • The pitch of sound: find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of
    the object that produced it.
  • How sound is measured: Measuring sound in Decibels.
  • How sound travels: Recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the
    sound source increases.
  • How the human ear hears sound: Recognise that vibrations from sounds travel
    through a medium to the ear

Term 2

  • Biology: The Human Impact
  • Food chains: Construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying
    producers, predators and prey.
  • Habitats: Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a
    variety of living things in their local and wider environment .
    Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose
    dangers to living things.

Chemistry: Matter

  • Changing state: solid, liquid and gas. Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases
  • Heating, cooling, melting: Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)
  • The water cycle: condensation and evaporation: Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

Term 3

Physics: Electricity

  • Circuits, conductors and insulators: recognise some common conductors and
    insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.
  • Magnetism: a magnet has a South and a North pole that will either attract or
    repel. The Earth has a magnetic field and we use a compass to find direction.
    Some materials are magnetic.

Biology: Animals including humans:

  • Digestion: describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system
    in humans
  • Teeth: identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions
  • Muscles: how the muscles work and identifying the main muscles in the human and animal body.

The final grade for the course will be calculated based on:

Multiple forms of formal and informal assessments including CAT 4, GL Assessments, will be used to gain knowledge about a student’s level of understanding.

Assessments will be in the form of End of Unit Evaluations, End of Unit Project, Lab Report and Formal Assessment.

All formal test dates will be posted on the communicator.
